Peru is promoting a portfolio of projects for US$7.5bn among investors participating in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, state news agency Andina reported.
More than 3,600 delegates and eight heads of state are attending the APEC leader's summit from November 17-23. On November 20, the Invest in Peru forum will take place.
"It is a very attractive portfolio. We are talking about projects for approximately US$2.5bn just in sanitation, while in construction there are others for around US$5bn," housing, construction and sanitation minister Enrique Cornejo was quoted as saying.
There are several Japanese investors interested in water and sanitation, according to the minister, who said he hopes to announce good news this week, especially for the country's provinces.
Canadian companies are also interested in investing, Cornejo said.
"A company from this country [Canada] is leading the La Chira wastewater treatment plant initiative [in Lima] and there is an agreement with Quebec and the national construction industry training institute, Sencico."
At the same time, Chinese investors are looking to develop construction initiatives with strategic partners, the minister said.
Financing already exists for projects to be carried out in Iquitos, Cajamarca, Cusco and the north of Lima, according to Cornejo.
"In these areas, there are projects for over US$200mn, such as the construction and installation of wastewater and potable water treatment plants," Cornejo said.
BILATERAL MEETINGS
In parallel to the official meetings, the APEC summit is a chance for Peru to strengthen its bilateral ties with several strategic trade partners.
Peruvian President Alan García will meet with heads of state from the US, Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Russia and Canada, local news service RPP reported.
Foreign affairs minister José Antonio García and deputy minister Gonzalo Gutiérrez will also meet with their counterparts from Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Brunei, Papa New Guinea, Taiwan and New Zealand.
Peru, which already has free trade agreements (FTAs) with Canada, Singapore, the US and Thailand, is expected to announce a similar agreement with China at the summit, the report said.
At the same time, it is expected that FTAs with South Korea and Japan will be discussed.
The 21 members of APEC account for 41% of the world's population, 49% of global trade and 55% of GDP.
